We recommend spaying or neutering once your pet is at least 6 months of age. Learn more on our Pet Surgery page.

Should I wait for my dog's first heat cycle before spaying?

No. If you do not plan on breeding your pet, we recommend spaying as soon as they are 6 months old.

Benefits of spaying:

  • Prevents heat cycles, along with the bleeding and unwanted attention from males that come with them
  • Prevents unplanned litters
  • Greatly lowers the risk of mammary (breast) cancer, especially when done before the first heat
  • Eliminates the risk of pyometra, a serious and life-threatening uterine infection
  • Eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer

Benefits of neutering:

  • Prevents unplanned litters
  • Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer
  • Lowers the risk of prostate problems
  • Can reduce roaming, marking, and mounting behaviors
  • In cats, can reduce spraying and fighting
What vaccines does my dog need for grooming?

Bathing and grooming services require pets to be up to date on Rabies (RV), Distemper Lepto (DAPPL), Kennel Cough (Bordetella), and Canine Influenza (CIV). Learn more on our Grooming page.
