In-house laboratory at Silverhill Animal Clinic

Bloodwork & Lab Testing

Pets can't tell us when something is wrong, and many illnesses don't show outward signs until they are advanced. Bloodwork gives us a look inside your pet's body, and we recommend it at least once a year as part of their wellness care.

Benefits of Yearly Bloodwork

  • Catches problems early: Finds disease before symptoms appear, when it is often easier and less costly to treat
  • Sets a baseline: Shows what is normal for your pet, so changes from year to year are easier to spot
  • Checks organ health: Monitors how well the kidneys and liver are working
  • Screens for common conditions: Helps detect diabetes, thyroid disease, anemia, and infection
  • Keeps medications safe: Monitors pets on long-term medications for side effects
  • Prepares for surgery: We recommend bloodwork before any surgery to check for bleeding or clotting issues and to make sure your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia
  • Supports senior pets: As pets age, the risk of disease rises and regular bloodwork becomes even more important

Tests We Offer

We offer both in-house testing, for fast results while you wait, and reference lab testing for more specialized tests.

  • Complete blood count (CBC): Checks red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets for anemia, infection, inflammation, and clotting problems
  • Chemistry panel: Measures organ function, electrolytes, and more to check the health of the kidneys, liver, and other organs
  • Glucose: Measures blood sugar to screen for and monitor diabetes
  • Thyroid: Checks for an underactive thyroid, common in dogs, or an overactive thyroid, common in cats
  • SDMA: An early marker of kidney disease that can detect problems sooner than standard kidney tests
  • proBNP: Helps screen for heart disease, even before symptoms appear
  • cPL (dogs) and fPL (cats): Help diagnose pancreatitis, a painful inflammation of the pancreas
  • Cortisol: Helps diagnose Cushing's disease and Addison's disease, two hormone disorders
  • Heartworm: Screens for heartworm disease, a serious condition spread by mosquitoes
  • Parvo: Detects parvovirus, a highly contagious and dangerous virus, especially in puppies
  • Giardia: Detects a common intestinal parasite that can cause diarrhea
  • Intestinal parasites: A stool test that checks for worms such as roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms
  • Urinalysis: Checks for urinary tract infections, crystals, kidney problems, and diabetes

We'll go over the results with you and explain what they mean for your pet.
